Projeto Porta-Jazz / Guimarães Jazz • Soma

Guimarães Jazz 2023

In 2023 the proposal suggested in the context of the partnership between Guimarães Jazz and the association Porta-Jazz will be the project Soma, a quartet led by the saxophonist and composer José Soares. The performance of this ensemble – formed, besides Soares, by José Diogo Martins on piano, Omer Govreen on double-bass and João Lopes Pereira on drums – will be complemented by the collaboration with Argentinian visual artist Varvara Tazelaar. Musically influenced by the aesthetics of contemporary music, noise music and experimentalist tendencies, the compositions and the images developed within this project will be based upon and narratively expanded by the texts of Gonçalo M. Tavares, Robert Musil, Gaston Bachelard, Clarice Lispector and Maria Gabriela Llansol.

José Soares (b. Luxembourg, 1991) began his musical studies at the Philharmonic Society Santanense, in Figueira da Foz, and proceeded his academic training at ESMAE and the Amsterdam Conservatory, having also attended several masterclasses and workshops directed by great jazz musicians of the present, such as Tony Malaby, Ralph Alessi or John Escreet. In parallel to his activity with extended ensembles such as the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra and the Portuguese Symphonic Band, the saxophonist is currently a member of the Ensemble Super Moderne and a regular collaborator of some of the most notorious names of the new generation of Portuguese jazz, namely Eduardo Cardinho, Pedro Melo Alves or João Grilo, among others. José Soares is also engaged in a prolific work of composition as leader or co-leader, in bands where he collaborates with several foreign musicians, among them vocalist Fuensanta Mendéz, trumpeter Alistair Payne or bassist Jort Terwijn.

A native of Israel currently living in Amsterdam, where he concluded his musical studies, Omer Govreen (b. 1994) is a double-bassist active both in the Israeli and Dutch jazz scenes and with a multifaceted work both as sideman, in groups led by prestigious musicians such as Aviv Noam, Billy Cobham or Michael Moore, as well as leader of his own formations, among which he may highlight the bands Garden Crack and the duo Govreen/Sever, co-lead with pianist Aleksander Sever.

João Lopes Pereira (b. Lisbon, 1994) is a drummer with a solid musical training, both in jazz as well as in the domain of classical percussion, and a musician who, despite his youth, already presents an impressive curriculum of collaborations with several of the most reputed figures of Portuguese jazz, among them Filipe Melo, Sara Serpa, Perico Sambeat, Ricardo Toscano or Mário Laginha. Besides his activity as sideman, João Lopes Pereira develops an authorial work with the band !Golpe!, which he co-leads with trumpeter Gonçalo Marques.

A pianist from Braga, José Diogo Martins (b. 1993) has attended classes at the Superior Music School of Lisbon and the Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium, in Copenhagen, and throughout his professional career has collaborated with important musicians of Portuguese jazz and improvised music, such as Demian Cabaud, Marcos Cavaleiro, Mané Fernandes or Hugo Antunes, among others, while also participating in projects such as the Omniae Ensemble of Pedro Melo Alves, the group Empa of Miguel Rodrigues and the project Jazz in the Space Age, as invited soloist of the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra. As a composer, José Diogo Martins wrote the opera “THEATRO – general rehearsal”, in partnership with Pedro Lima and Francisco Fontes.

Varvara Tazelaar is an Argentinian artist formally trained in photography, design, sculpture and fashion production, with a multifaceted professional activity in various artistic fields as a photographer, video director, scenographer and art director.
