Guimarães Jazz 2022

In 2022 Guimarães Jazz inaugurates a new partnership with the University of Aveiro, more specifically its Center of Jazz Studies, a department which in recent years has developed a consistent work of documentation, archival and commentary of the Portuguese jazz production. This new format of institutional association between the festival and Portuguese civil society aims to present each year a group or a project considered worth distinction due to its particular artistic qualities and originality. In the first edition of this partnership, the project to which the Award for the Best Ensemble and Best Original Arrangement at the II International Jazz Contest of the UA was granted was the trio THEMANUS, founded by saxophonist and composer Afonso Silva, and co-led by Eduardo Carneiro and Ricardo Alves. Based on a formation of saxophone, guitar and drums, THEMANUS explores both composition and improvisation and incorporates aesthetical influences beyond jazz such as drum’n’bass and ambient music.

A native of Ovar, Afonso Silva is a saxophonist and composer with formal training in jazz at ESMAE and whose musical activity is mainly focused on collaborations in the context of the Portuguese jazz circuit, such as the participation in the recording of the album “Dharma Bums”, by Gianni Narduzzi, released by Porta-Jazz this year. In parallel, Afonso Silva composes and produces music under the artistic name of A-BS, having released one album (“2020”) to this date.

Eduardo Carneiro is a drummer and percussionist based in Porto. He began his musical studies in 2014 at the Conservatory of Porto and in 2021 he finished his graduation in jazz drums at ESMAE. In the academic context, Carneiro has worked with renowned musicians of different genres and backgrounds, such as world music (Omar Acosta, Paulo das Cavernas), jazz (Guillermo Klein, Eliot Zigmund, Seamus Blake) and classical music (Claire Liitzler, Dominique Vleeshouwers).

Ricardo Alves is a guitarist from Viana do Castelo and is currently a resident member of the Estarreja Jazz Orchestra. Alves’ musical activity includes collaborations with Portuguese pop musicians such as Miguel Araújo or António Zambujo, participation in television shows and the production and arrangements, in co-authorship with João Soares, for the musical “Saturday Night Fever”, which premiered in 2019 at Casino Estoril.
