Vila Flor Palace and Garden

The eighteenth-century Vila Flor Palace was commissioned by the Portuguese nobleman, Tadeu Luís António Lopes de Carvalho de Fonseca and Camões. It was subsequently purchased by the family of the Counts of Arrochela, who hosted Queen D. Maria II in the palace, when she visited Guimarães and elevated its status from town to city. The palace was sold again, and hosted the 1st Industrial and Commercial Exhibition of Guimarães in 1884. Later it wa purchased by the Jordão family, who completed the work that was begun by Tadeu Luís, with the exception of the sequence of statues of the Kings of Portugal located on the Palace’s north and west facades. It was acquired by Guimarães City Council in 1976, and initially housed the Guiimarães pole of of the University of Minho. The Municipal vegetable garden was originally installed in the area originally occupied by the palace’s vegetable garden. After its acquisition by the Municipality, it was abandoned for several years. The Palace has undergone numerous interventions aimed primarily at dividing its interior. It was initially used to house the University of Minho, and then a music academy, a theatre workshop, a university organisation, professional training rooms. None of these interventions aimed at the rehabilitation and restoration of the Palace as a whole. As a result its interior was degraded and, above all, its identity was distorted by so many transient and disconnected changes. The passage of time and the effects of bad weather left marks on the exterior that required requalification. This 18th century Palace - which the Parish Memories of 1750 refer to as having an “admirable architecture and a grandiose landscaped garden” - has now been remodelled and equipped, and is part of the Centro Cultural Vila Flor. The vestiges from the original 18th century Quinta Vila estate include the boxwood gardens, with terraces bordering the Palace’s north façade, which, according to various historical and architectural texts, are highly representative of manor house terraces of the epoch.
