Projeto Orquestra de Jazz da ESMAE / Guimarães Jazz

The pedagogical facet of Guimarães Jazz constitutes one of the festival’s most important dimensions and the project with the Jazz Orchestra of ESMAE, one of Portugal’s prestigious academic institutions specialized in the teaching of music, is, alongside with the workshops, one of the pivots of this formative effort.
This partnership, which began in 2012, is based on a proposal of residency and collaboration between the students and the members of ESMAE’s orchestra with experienced musicians with a relevant work in the field of jazz music. In 2023 will be of the responsibility of the group Landline Plus One, an ensemble of collective composition, improvisation and interdisciplinary collaboration formed by pianist Jacob Sacks, saxophonist Chet Doxas, double-bassist Zach Lober, drummer Vinnie Sperazza and trumpeter Suzan Veneman. Guimarães Jazz will again offer a group of young musicians a highly challenging creative experience based on a crucial principle of assimilation of knowledge and ideas, thus favoring the artistic growth and the development of the technical skills of the students of the present who will be the future of Portuguese jazz.
