bulabulay mun?

Tjimur Dance Theatre

In 1874, Japanese forces attacked indigenous communities in southern Taiwan due to the Ba Yao Bay incident. This event, known as the "Mudan Incident of 1987," marked the first Japanese military attack on a foreign country since the Meiji Restoration, and the first war involving foreign forces in Taiwan's contemporary history. In "bulabulay mun?," the Tjimur Dance Theatre reconstructs this historic battle that has been forgotten over time. They move like soldiers marching to war. With the rhythms of ancient ballads, they cry out to the sky and earth. Shouldn't those who defended their homeland a hundred years ago be etched in history?

"bulabulay mun?," which means "how are you?" in the Paiwan indigenous language, is a journey towards healing the wound. It is a way of sending greetings to the ancient spirits, to the people currently living in the Mudan tribe, and even to the Japanese people, in a feeling of unity and togetherness, because we are stronger when we stand together.

The Tjimur Dance Theatre is Taiwan's first professional dance group focusing on contemporary Paiwan people. Founded by artistic director Ljuzem Madiljin in 2006, with Baru Madiljin as the dance director and choreographer, this group is dedicated to interpreting contemporary experiences through ancient ballads, integrating music with dance, and using music as a guide to create their own dance style. This style is based on the body expressions of the Paiwan culture and its unique approach among Taiwan's contemporary dance groups.
