Leonor and Benjamim
Leonor and Benjamim is the first opera of the 2025/2026 biennium under the project “The Body and Power – The Operatic Artifice as an Analytical Process.”
Lisbon, 1506. Leonor and Benjamim are two teenagers in love. She is from a traditional family; he, from a family of New Christians, of Jewish origin. While Portugal prospers from trade with the Indies, famine and plague ravage the city, leaving it vulnerable to religious fanaticism, which in April sparks the massacre of thousands of Jews – men, women, and children. Their romance is cut short by devastation. But Leonor survives, only to discover that love transcends even death.
