Victor Costa
The creative process of Victor Costa (Guimarães, 1944) centers on painting. At Palácio Vila Flor, his solo exhibition takes over the entire exhibition space, offering a synthesis of his artistic practice through a visual and conceptual journey across much of his body of work. Featuring both drawings and paintings, the exhibition presents Victor Costa’s universe—a long-standing investigation and reflection on the way the world reveals itself through the gaze.
Through color and form, the overlays, additions, and transparencies that define his technique emphasize the continuous process of constructing and deconstructing the image. The substance of painting becomes a constant fusion between material and the illusion of the image, exploring the tension between reality and what remains of it. Throughout his career, Costa has explored various plastic dimensions, moving from global landscapes to everyday themes, focusing on the aesthetics and materials of urban peripheries and industrial sites. He subverts icons of these landscapes in layered paintings, creating visual rhythms and structures that engage with the experience of looking.
