SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8, 4:00 PM
Projeto Centro de Estudos de Jazz Univ. Aveiro / Guimarães Jazz Hugo Santos 5tet
The principle of collaborative dialogue with the various entities committed to promoting jazz in Portugal has been consistently upheld by Guimarães Jazz throughout its history. This has taken shape across different stages of the festival's development through partnerships with record labels (Tone of a Pitch), collectives (Porta-Jazz, Sonoscopia), and educational institutions (ESMAE).
The association with the University of Aveiro, through its Jazz Studies Centre and, more specifically, the International Jazz Competition (CIJ) it promotes, is the most recent project embraced by the festival within this synergistic approach—opening itself to the diverse agents involved in jazz promotion and creation across the many forms of the Portuguese jazz scene.
In 2025, the 5th edition of the CIJ (International Jazz Competition) awarded the Hugo Santos 5tet with the prizes for Best Ensemble, Best Original Composition, and Best Original Arrangement. Led by its drummer and composed of a group of musicians — Duarte Júlio, Simão Raimundo, Rafael Oliveira, and Pedro Miranda — who have studied or are currently studying jazz at ESMAE, this ensemble delivers a vibrant, electric jazz that, while rooted in solid jazz foundations, also draws on rock and funk influences.
Through this gesture of showcasing emerging musicians, Guimarães Jazz fulfills one of its core objectives: encouraging jazz creation in Portugal, while also offering its audience a glimpse into the aesthetic trends being explored by the newest voices in this music. Judging by previous editions and by the group featured in this year’s festival, it becomes clear that we are witnessing a generation of musicians who, perhaps because they grew up in a time when access to music is virtually unlimited, absorb a wide range of musical references more naturally—perhaps even more naturally than in the past.
This phenomenon seems to anticipate a tendency toward the dissolution of genre boundaries and the emergence of a new jazz landscape that is more clearly multi-lingual. Whether this will be the future of jazz is a question that will ultimately be answered by young musicians like those who make up the Hugo Santos 5tet — and, of course, by those willing to listen with the attention it deserves.
