DEBATE I Dance in a Critical State
On the importance of imagination and re-imagining in times
of great fragility
Rehabilitating the possibility of thinking about the future.
That is what dance, at this GUIdance, brings us. It is not about closing the door—or our senses—to the wounds and violence in which we currently live, nor to the present traces of a less-than-glorious past. It is about reactivating imagination and the exercise of re-imagining, while remaining aware of the many threats to freedom, the threats to human existence, the threat of the extinction of all forms of life on the planet, the threat to understanding and welcoming those who seek refuge, the threat to tolerance, and the threat to valuing difference.
In some way, the proposals of GUIdance 2026 are permeated by these questions: some approach them with joy and humour; others as acts of courage and endurance; others as a claim for seduction, pleasure, and desire; and still others as a celebration and articulation of coexistence among differences. The body vibrates and carries with it thought and critical visions of the world’s critical state. It is about all of this that we will converse on these two Saturdays, inspired by the programme of GUIdance 2026.
