Beyond Miles - Pedro Emanuel Pereira
A pianist and composer with an exceptional career in the field of contemporary classical music, Pedro Emanuel Pereira will present in his native city his first creative foray into jazz, embodied in a project inspired by the aesthetic and conceptual principles of Miles Davis’s music. Performing his compositions, Pereira will be joined by an ensemble featuring lyric singer and frequent collaborator Helena Ressurreição, alongside three highly regarded musicians from the Portuguese jazz scene: João Barradas on accordion, André Rosinha on double bass, and Ricardo Coelho on vibraphone.
Pedro Emanuel Pereira (Guimarães, 1990) began his musical studies in his hometown and, after completing his initial training, continued his higher education at the prestigious Moscow and Amsterdam Conservatories, where he graduated with distinction. A pianist renowned for his technical virtuosity and a composer drawn to the exploration of diverse musical worlds, Pereira has, over the past decade, developed a career divided between his work as a soloist and concert pianist, performing in some of the most prestigious venues on the European classical music circuit, and, in parallel, his compositional work, both as a solo creator and in creative collaborations with musicians such as clarinettist Carlos Ferreira, violinist Ana Mar, pianists Alexey Kurbatov and Lukas Geniusas, and multi-instrumentalist Vítor Joaquim.
His body of work is documented in four recordings released to date, including his debut album Russian Journey — a tribute to the Russian musical tradition — and his most recent release, Aonde a Terra Acaba, in which he performs works by Bach, António Vitorino d’Almeida, and Paul Hindemith, alongside one of his own compositions. In addition to his career as a concert pianist and composer, Pedro Emanuel Pereira also conducts academic research at the University of Aveiro and works in music production. He is one of the founding members of Percos Music and serves as artistic director of the Convívios ao Piano festival.
Beyond Miles is a project centred, as its title suggests, on the work of one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. A multifaceted trumpeter and composer and a pioneer of several of the most significant developments in modern jazz, Miles Davis is today virtually synonymous with the genre and continues to be a source of inspiration for countless musicians of younger generations — a defining characteristic of the great artists.
In this concert, Pedro Emanuel Pereira will present compositions based on musical principles explored by Miles Davis, accompanied by an ensemble of voice, accordion, vibraphone, and double bass in a demanding and ambitious creative endeavour that seeks to bring different musical territories into dialogue.
